Garches is an excellent example of Le Corbusier's particular interpretation
of the machine aesthetic. It can be seen as an icon of the Modern Movement.
He took advantage of the fact having less constraints than oppurtunities
in terms of the site and the clients who could afford an expensive villa
and were opened minded to modern art and architecture. Alltogether enabled
him to bring several strands of his ideology. He displays consumate techniques
in the deployment of spaces and volumes, demonstrating the potential of
his 'Maison Domino' project. Purist maxims are much in evidence in the way
the design exemplifies universality, perceptual clarity, a functional basis
in the use of objects types (spiral stair, long windows, sculpted stairs)
and in the use of regulating lines to control proportions.
The villa is still existent. The exterior is in good condition while the
interior is divided into four single appartments. |
